The festival has been formed in the year of 2005, as a continuance of the activities of the artistic director Risima Risimkin, in the area and development of modern dance in Macedonia . From its beginnings, Dance Fest Skopje has a task to present contemporary productions of National ballets and other prestige companies from the region, Europe and the world.


The basic idea is:


to follow the tendencies of developments of modern dance worldwide

to exchange experiences with artists from other cultural places

to place the Macedonian contemporary dance stage beyond our borders

to develop new, young audience

to educate the audience

to involve the audience in the process of development of contemporary dance

to include the Macedonian dance stage in European projects




Macedonia is a land of the dance, the song, the music. It is a country in which people express their happiness and sadness through music and dance with centuries. As a historical crossroad with many roads passing through and crossing by, Macedonia is a place where they, the cultures, which lead those roads, are interlacing. We have put our place in the area of dance on the map of worldwide cultural events through the festival Dance Fest Skopje in the past four years, as a recognizable mark on the Macedonian modern dance stage.




Dance Fest Skopje, under the artistic leadership of RR was formed in 2005 as a unique festival for ballet and dance in Macedonia. The festival from the very beginning has become known for its program quality and outstanding mission and vision. It is a bridge between Macedonia and the world, an opportunity for artists to communicate and a place where everyone can be what they are.

The mission of the festival was and still is going in the direction of making a strong connection with artists from different countries and cultures and giving them the opportunity to work together. It is a ground on which bi-directional long lasting relationships in dance can be made.

In the last 9 years, an army of dancers has gone through the festival venues, several stages in Skopje: Macedonian National Theatre, Macedonian Opera and Ballet, Youth Cultural Center, newly opened Stage Zebra, and some others in Bitola.

Companies like the National Ballets from Lisbon, (Portugal); Pecs, (Hungary); Belgrade, (Serbia); Ljubljana, (Slovenia); Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya, (Turkey);; Netherlands Dance Theater, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, Galili Dance Company, Rotterdam dance Academy, (Netherlands); Battery Dance Company & Philadanco! (USA); State Ballet Hildesheim, Steptext dance Project, Germany; Kan Butoh Company, (Japan); Bely Theater, St. Petersburg, Russia and others presented their work and made ​​a strong impact on the development of the contemporary dance scene in Macedonia.

The board of the festival, which is composed of top intellectuals, artists and journalists gives the MENADA award for lifetime achievements in the field of dance, in honor of all the great dancers who have left their mark the evolution of ballet and dance as an artform in Macedonia: Gorgi Makedonski, Natka Penusliska, Olga Milosavleva, Irena Veterova, Tatyana Petkovska, Elisaveta Kusovska, Ekrem Husein, but also the important names of the global dance scene as Vladimir Vasiliev, Gradimir Punk and this year Hans van Manen.

Part of the additional program of the festival is the first Dance Parade in Macedonia with more than 1000 participants on the streets of Skopje (2010), many workshops for dancers and choreographers, a contemporary dance workshop with over 100 participants from all over Macedonia (2013), conferences for dance, promotions of books for dance, Dance Screen programs etc.

In it's short history, Dance Fest Skopje has appeared on the front pages of world-famous dance magazines several times such as Dance Europe and Dance for you, and photos of performances and events have been published by international news agencies such as Getty images, Reuters and others.

Dance Fest Skopje is not just a festival, it connects, it is life, inspiration and personal thing, in which every visitor will be found and will find it is the TASTE OF DANCE!

Dance Fest Skopje Macedonia, Risima Risimkin

The festival has been formed in the year of 2005, as a continuance of the program “April – the month of dance”, which had been introduced by the cultural centre Interart in the year 2003.


Under the leadership of the artistic director Risima Risimkin, this program has evolved from a national happening in the dance area to international festival Dance Fest Skopje in 2005.




As part of its program, Dance Fest has included important European and regional National companies, as well as many prestige dance companies which cultivate the contemporary dance expression.


During its 9 years of existence, the festival has become a recognizable brand in Macedonia and abroad. DANCEEUROPE, the most famous magazine worldwide whose editor Ms. Ema Maning was in Skopje , has written about the festival couple of times. Last year, in this magazine's edition in May, the festival was put on the front page, as an important happening in the dance area
